Concept
This bag was developed from a client-based brief. Process documentation shared with permission.
Key needs:
- Rigid body, does not slump over when sat down
- Side-to-side adjustable strap rather than typical double handle straps.
- Hidden magnetic closure with stitching details around magnet
- Clean, open interior with some concealed storage
- Canvas main body fabric
The goal was to create a simple, usable and durable canvas tote that solved all their pain points while creating something new.
Moodboard
Inspired by simple structured totes.
The goal was to find interesting ideas and ways of implementing the key needs of the client.
Images gathered show form, minimiliasitc construction, fastener solutions and patterning ideas.
Sketching and validating
I sketched:
- Strap routing and adjustment mechanisms
- Interior pocket layouts
- Construction details to validate features
Taking inspiration from the mood board I decided to implement a passthrough panel allowing the strap to flow through the bag. Routing the strap through the side panel helps to keep the user free from snagging while still allowing adjustment for shoulder or crossbody wearing using the adjustment loops on the side panel.
I created some simple renders from the sketches using Viscom to get a better picture of what the final product would look like before continuing development.
Pattern Development
Patterns were developed with several factors in mind:
- How and where to place interfacing to allow for appropriate stiffness (ex. stopping interfacing 1" below top hem stitching to allow minimal resistance pulling magnets apart when closed)
- Common failure points (ex. Solved with reinforcement panels on the bottom 1/4 of bag and high tension areas utilizing box stitching)
- Magnet strength (ex. face of magnet was purposefully placed behind only 1 layer of fabric to ensure good connection when closed)

Tech Pack
Tech pack was created including:
- Detailed flats
- Panel assembly breakdowns
- Stitching info
- Complete construction information
- Panel orientation and direction
Attention was given to construction graphics to ensure clear communication through visuals rather than words.

The finished bag delivers:
- Clean side-adjust single strap
- Structured body
- Hidden magnetic closure
- Organized interior with large zipper pocket and sunglass pocket
- Durable construction meant to stand up to everyday usage
